L&D Article Review #12

Where do you draw your inspiration for L&D? If you’re Tim Ferriss then you might look towards cooking to understand how people learn. I don't know about you, but following a recipe is textbook task analysis! So I was curious to learn how Ferriss' concept of "metalearning" could be applied to our toolkit for adult learning.

Article #12: Metalearning, The Four Hour Chef, and Instructional Design - By Connie Malamed

How long it took to read? - 3 minutes

Who is it for? - L&Ders who want to draw inspiration from other fields and would like to apply it to adult learning.

What I took from this article - I love to cook. To be able to make a dish that (somewhat) resembles the picture is a great achievement. Even better when your guests don't reach for the salt shaker after it's served! Ferriss' book, The 4 Hour Chef, is really a self-help book directed towards understanding the concept of metalearning and how you can apply it to pick up new skills fast. Malamed breaks this down in the article by understanding the steps for this type of learning and then offers examples on how to apply it in L&D, such as: reducing content to minimal moving parts and speaking to experts who learned in nontraditional ways. It's interesting to see where inspiration strikes and even more so when you can apply it to what you're passionate about!
